Tulsa Shootout 2015 - Review

The week started out with moving 1007 cars into the Tulsa Expo complex.  Twelve hours later the pits were set for the 549 drivers from around America and Canada to compete in four days of racing.  Glenn Waterland #11c and Jesse Fernandez #19 were kindly pitted next to Ryan Kent from Missouri in somewhat close quarters.

Day 1 was hot laps for all the classes including the 29 1200 Minisprints who were in attendance from 14 states around America.

Day 2 was a double show for the Minisprints with the Heats in the morning and the Qualifiers last up at night.  Heat one saw Glenn drive from grid 7 of 7 cars to fourth position (third after a car was DQ’d for being underweight) on a newly worked track.  Jesse ran in heat two from grid 3 of 7 cars to finish 6th in his first start on the Tulsa bullring.  Both drivers found the track conditions challenging with their setups but were looking forward to the Qualifiers.

Qualifiers were run race 90 of the day for Jesse and the slick track caught him out ultimately ending up with a DNF due to spins starting off 6 out of 7 cars.  Glenn was race 91 and started position 4 bringing the car home in 4th.

With the results and passing points tallied from the Heats and Qualifiers the 1200’s had a day to watch the six other classes complete their qualifiers and C mains.  Jesse would compete early morning on Saturday in the B-Main hoping to make the top 6 positions to transfer to the A-main.  Although the car setup was better and Jesse was getting used to the track he finished in 9th unfortunately not making the transfer.

Glenn started off 10th in a field of 20 cars for the A-main and hit the setup fairly well.  The track provided two good racing lines and therefore resulted in some hot and heavy racing between positions 4 – 8.  Glenn achieved 5th with his best driving of the week.  Exclamation’s from the drivers finishing in the positions around him (‘that was the most fun I have had in a racecar’) proved it was indeed a great race to watch and drive.

Well done to both drivers to represent Colorado and prove that RMLSA drivers can foot it with the nation’s best.  Both drivers gained a lot of knowledge about the track, their cars and valued the advice they were given from other drivers and crew.  Congratulations also to Frank Flud for his dominant win.

Here's an in car video from the first heat race, stay tuned for more!

Rules Updated for 2015!

Following the very successful rules meeting of November 21 the RMLSA rule book has been updated.

Ciick here to see the full rule book: 2015 RMLSA Rules

Here are highlights of the updates:

Membership:

All Non Members will pay a $25 per race admin fee.  These fees will apply towards the membership fee for that racing season.

All drivers must pay a $5 pill draw fee at each event. This goes into the points fund, which will be distributed at the end of the year banquet to the top ten finishers in points.  This fund will be supplemented by any sponsors through the year.

Technical:

ZX12 engine cars must weigh 1025 pounds with the driver non winged, and 1050 pounds with the driver winged.

Grid line ups:

The invert for the main event will be determined by the results of the heat races. The first week of the season, the feature is lined up heads up by the heat race finishes. After week one, the top four finishers in each heat qualify for the feature invert. All heat race 5th place and back will start the feature heads up behind the invert. The invert qualifiers will be lined up inverted by feature race points average with the zero points average cars lined up heads up behind those with a points average. The 4 that transfer from the “B” main are not eligible for the inversion. They will start at the rear of the “A” main in the order of finish from the “B” main behind the 5th and 6th place heat race finishing cars.

Points:

A separate passing points award, call the Hard Charger Award, will be awarded for the car that passes the most cars in an entire season. This is based on feature starting position and feature finishing position. 1 point awarded for each position gained.
